Homage Ceremony | 2017

Commissioned by: Ismaili Global Leaders International Forum
Conductor: Hussein Janmohamed

A global gathering of Ismaili traditional vocalists and master musicians came together to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan. Artists from around the world rehearsed for 10 days to prepare a repertoire of traditional and devotional music from Tajikistan, Afghanistan, South Asia, Iran, Syria, Andalusia and beyond. The process was collaborative. We worked in three languages, Arabic, Persian and English through translators. Traditional knowledge keepers from each country led the group in culturally specific performance practices. Instrumentalists improvised and created interlude music. As an artistic facilitator I curated the diverse offerings into an artistic program that was further shaped by the ensemble. When appropriate vocalists added traditional vocal nuances and/or harmonies developed by the ensemble. Working across cultures is not always easy, but when we find a sweet spot through the channel of love, devotion, and submission, meaningful music and strong relationships can emerge.
